Tasbih Counter Guide: Dhikr Targets, 33-99-100 and Daily Practice

A digital misbaha that never forgets your count. How the 33-33-34 formula works, which phrases carry the most reward, and building a daily dhikr habit that sticks.

01 · Why 33: the Prophetic formula

After every obligatory prayer, the Prophet ﷺ taught Fatimah a formula still used fourteen centuries later: Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 34 times. One hundred phrases that, in another narration, weigh heavier than mountains of good deeds.

The numbers are not random. Thirty-three fits the fingers of both hands with thumbs as markers, which is exactly how the companions counted on joints before beads existed. Our counter keeps the same rhythm with targets of 33, 66, 99, 100 and 500.

02 · The three phrases and what they mean

Subhanallah declares Allah free of every flaw. Say it when creation amazes you or when anxiety whispers that things depend on you. Alhamdulillah attributes every blessing to its source. Say it deliberately, naming the blessing in your heart. Allahu Akbar puts everything in scale: whatever worries you, Allah is greater.

Then the set completes with La ilaha illa Allah, wahdahu la sharika lah, the heaviest phrase on the scale. Our counter auto-advances through the three phrases each ring so a full set finishes without thinking.

03 · Building a daily habit

Anchor dhikr to existing prayers, not to motivation. After Fajr, one ring of 33. After Maghrib, a full set of 100. Commute time becomes istighfar time. The counter saves progress in your browser, so an interrupted ring waits for you.

Start with 100 a day for forty days. Research on habit formation and the Prophetic love of small consistent deeds agree: tiny daily beats heroic weekly. Rings completed and total dhikr on the dashboard make the streak visible.

04 · Tasbih etiquette most people miss

Presence beats speed. Racing through 500 while planning dinner earns the motion, not the meaning. Pause on each phrase long enough to hear it in your own chest. The counter vibrates per tap so you can close your eyes and still track.

Count on fingers sometimes too. The Sunnah mentions fingers testifying on the Last Day. Alternate: beads or app on busy days, fingers in quiet moments.

Tasbih questions

Why 33 times and not 100?

33-33-34 is the post-prayer Sunnah formula totalling 100. Both are valid; 33 is simply what the Prophet ﷺ taught for after salah.

Does digital counting count?

Yes. Fingers, beads and apps are all means. Scholars permit counters; sincerity is what matters, not the instrument.

Which dhikr has the most reward?

La ilaha illa Allah is called the best dhikr, and SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi one hundred times wipes sins though like sea foam (Bukhari, Muslim).

Is my count saved?

Yes, rings and totals persist in your browser on this device, no account needed.
