01 · What mahr actually is
Mahr is a mandatory gift from groom to bride that makes the nikah complete. The Quran commands it plainly: give women their dowries graciously. It belongs to her alone. Neither her father, nor her husband, nor anyone else may take a dirham of it without her willing consent.
What mahr is not: not a bride price paid to the family, not a deposit, and not a punishment clause. It is honor made tangible, security she owns from day one, and the first financial act of the marriage.
02 · How much: no fixed amount
Islam sets no minimum and no maximum. A ring of iron sufficed for one companion. Umar ibn al-Khattab once tried to cap mahr and was corrected from the pulpit by a woman quoting Quran 4:20. The amount is whatever both families willingly agree.
Fairness beats size. Scholars advise a sum the groom can actually pay without debt or delay games: meaningful enough to honor, light enough to give cheerfully. Extravagant demands that delay marriages contradict the spirit of the Sunnah.
03 · Mahr-e-Fatimi: the blessed benchmark
When the Prophet ﷺ married his daughter Fatimah to Ali, the mahr was 500 dirhams of silver, roughly 1575 grams by most estimates. At September 2026 silver near $2.17 a gram, that is about $3,420, but the number moves with silver daily.
Mahr-e-Fatimi is mustahab, a beloved precedent, not a ceiling and not a floor. Couples use it as a dignified middle: neither token nor crushing. Our calculator applies it with one tap using your typed silver rate.
04 · Prompt vs deferred
Mahr splits into mu'ajjal, payable at or right after nikah, and mu'akhkhar, deferred to later, divorce or death. Scholars recommend paying at least part promptly. A fully deferred mahr that nobody ever intends to pay is a debt on the husband's neck, due in full if the marriage ends.
Write both portions into the nikahnama with exact figures. Vague promises evaporate. A good split many families use: enough prompt to be real, the rest deferred as her security.
05 · Cash, gold or silver
Cash is simplest and instantly usable. Gold holds value across decades and suits families who think in jewellery. Silver tracks the Fatimi benchmark directly. Whatever the form, record weight, purity and rate on the wedding day so no one argues later.
Type today's rate, not last year's. Metals move fast, and a stale rate silently shrinks or inflates her right. The calculator keeps your typed rate and never overwrites it.

Is mahr compulsory?
Yes. Quran 4:4 commands it. A nikah without any mahr is defective and the wife can claim a proper mahr.
Who owns the mahr?
The bride alone, exclusively. Taking it back without her consent is forbidden.
What is Mahr-e-Fatimi in money today?
About 1575g silver. At $2.17/g that is roughly $3,420, but check today's silver rate.
Can mahr be paid later?
Yes, the deferred portion. But prompt payment is recommended, and deferred mahr becomes due on divorce or death.
Is there a maximum mahr?
No. Umar's attempted cap was publicly corrected. Any mutually agreed amount is valid.
