Fitrana Guide: Sadaqah al-Fitr Amount, Rules and Deadline

Sadaqah al-Fitr is the charity every Muslim pays at Ramadan's end, one sa', about 2.5 to 3 kilos of staple food, per person, or its cash value. It purifies the fasting person from idle talk and feeds the poor on Eid morning.

The head of household pays for everyone under his care, including children and newborns born before Eid prayer. Servants and dependents count too.

One sa' of the local staple: wheat, rice, dates or raisins. Most mosques publish a cash figure each Ramadan, typically 8 to 15 dollars or pounds in Tier-1 countries. Type this year's figure yourself, because it moves with food prices.

Richer families may pay the date or raisin equivalent, which runs several times higher. Paying above the minimum is charity with extra reward.

Fitrana is due before the Eid prayer. Paid after, it counts as ordinary charity, and the obligation's special reward is lost. Most scholars allow paying a day or two early so distributors can deliver on time.
