01 · Fidya: when fasting is permanently out
Fidya applies to the one who cannot fast and cannot make it up later: the very elderly, the chronically ill with no hope of recovery, and similar lasting excuses. For each missed fast, feed one poor person one full meal, or pay its cash value.
Temporary illness works differently. If you expect recovery, you owe qada, making up the fasts later, not fidya. Fidya is only for the fast that will never be made up.
02 · How much is one meal
One fidya meal is what an average person eats twice daily in your city, commonly 6 to 12 dollars or pounds in Tier-1 countries. Mosques publish Ramadan figures yearly. Type today's local cost, because food prices move.
Multiply missed days by the meal cost. Ten missed fasts at $8 is $80, owed to the poor as food or cash through a trusted channel.
03 · Kaffara: the broken fast
Deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast without excuse triggers kaffara in the Hanafi school: free a slave, or fast sixty consecutive days, or feed sixty poor people. With slavery gone, the choice is sixty fasts or sixty meals.
Sixty consecutive means consecutive. One broken day restarts the count, which is why most people choose feeding. Our calculator prices sixty meals instantly in your currency.
